A study was conducted that involved 112 college students, who would report the frequency of their sexual activity. [1] These students were split into different categories – no sexual activity, infrequent sexual activity and frequent sexual activity. Then, the participants’ saliva was collected at the end of the study, and analysed for salivary immunoglobulin A (IgA), which, when scanned, is able to detect how healthy a person’s overall immune system is.

What the study discovered was that the participants who had less frequent sex, displayed substantially lower levels of IgA – which meant that not only were the ‘frequent participators’ having more fun under the sheets, but their immune systems were being boosted in the process too! This is crucial, as IgA is a very important antibody that contributes to your overall wellbeing by helping fight off diseases and other illnesses. The study notes that, ideally, having sex once or twice a week was the optimum level to strengthen the immune system.


Other academics have noted that the wide-ranging, overall benefits of frequent sex may play a large role in eventually boosting the immune system. In contrast, a substantial number of participants who reported low levels of physical touch ended up catching the cold, due to their less healthy immune systems. [11]

It’s because of results from studies like these that it becomes important to remain close to people, even in times of social distancing. If you can’t hug or touch anyone, even a virtual get-together over video call can help reduce anxiety and release some of that oxytocin that helps the immune system. [12]
